Greta’s Shirt
Greta’s Shirt
Greta Grimley wore a plaid shirt in Fargo’s episode 3, “A Muddy Road” (podcast link). The colors? Black, white and gray. Clearly this is symbolic of the layered decisions faced by her father, police office Gus Grimley, as he struggles with decisions about family and duty. Should he do what his job calls on him to do, protect and serve the public and intervene at the traffic stop? Or get back home safely to continue life with his young daughter? His decision is not an easy one, not a black and white yes or no. It is layered with gray like Greta’s shirt. Series writer Noah Hawley hammers this point home brilliantly by the double emphasis of the matching tablecloth. While the weight of these subtleties may be currently on the back of the Grimley family, we all will face them sooner or later.
